I want to be a writer.

Once upon a time, I believed I could be a poet. So, I wrote a bunch of poems, submitted them to some poetry mags and contests, and finally got two published. Somewhere in the American National Library of Poetry  & The International Library of Poetry  sit tomes containing my humble poems. I allowed myself to believe I only got in because I paid for the entry fee. You see, this was before the age of internet, where friends, family, and teachers were the fastest source of advice, even when they were unaware that they didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. So, I stopped my poetry… for a while.

About the same time I dreamt of being a screenwriter. I had produced a TV series at CUTV  called Jim’s Adventures with some college buddies. It was a show similar to SCTV & The Frantics… ie: purposefully campy!  I was the writer and director, as well as occasional actor, puppeteer, and editor. What I didn’t want to do was promotion. I left that to my buddy who was doing a marketing major. We had a ton of fun doing it, but it increasingly frustrating as my buddy explained all the roadblocks, barriers, and excuses for it not catching. And yet, we were gaining notoriety in college for it, our shows were being seen and getting participation from some of the top radio & TV personalities in Montreal at the time, we got recognition from the folks at MuchMusic (I know where Ed The Sock came from by the way! Wink, Wink!), and we had some fans. Again, this was before internet, or even the possibility of digitizing of our Beta & VHS master-tapes. We gave up on it and the originals were lost, along with my ambition to be a screenwriter… for a while.

Way down the road to about a year ago, and we find a friend of mine, a published author and writing coach herself, had the guts to re-ignite my dreams by saying that she believed I had a book in me. Bless her for she knew not what she’d done!  Or did she? I’ve been toying with this dream ever since! Toying, but not taking action. I had recently closed my first company, a talent agency, where I encouraged and fostered artists, but kept none of that advice for myself. The problem with doing that in a completely one-sided way, is that one empties their own creativity tank, so I needed to refill it again. I was already committed to read as many personal development books I could find time to read, so my friend suggested I start writing a journal and reviews of these books. She didn’t bother to tell me it was to restart my writing muscles, which is exactly what it did! I discovered that the ones I wrote best about where the most personally transformative. I started noticing that my journalling flowed more freely when I wrote of deeply emotional or personal topics. And I built on this practice daily.

Fascinated by the universal Laws of Attraction, I focused my reading and writing on what I thought I wanted. It came to me that I wanted to use my marketing knowledge, my love of community, and my desire to build relationships in a business. I sent this desire to the universe and Best Version Media came calling back. They offered me a position as publisher of a local community magazine. I was over the moon, as I saw it as a tool for more expression, more learning, more community, and more money. My primary task is in finding sponsors to finance the publication and help them design content driven advertising. Well, this propelled me back into a sales position, in my perception, but I took it for two reasons. One, I had the control over content, so I could write and infuse it with my vision of community. Two, building a stronger community was something I could be proud of and my daughter would be proud to say her Dad was doing. How this is progressing is a topic for another day. Let’s say it’s slow, and that is turning out to be a blessing in disguise.

In my networking I came across other mentors who worked in media and publishing, giving me all sorts of inspiration, guidance, and distraction my my goal of publishing this mag. One of those inspirations, was to blog. I had no bloody clue how to set up a blog and frankly the prospect terrified me! I looked at a bunch of different sites, got confused and put it back on the back burner. I found that this frustration was also causing me to diminish my writing output. However, it blissfully had the opposite affect on my reading. I read more, always telling myself I was preparing for my perfect launch. Choosing to ignore the recurring message that came across in many different books. JUST DO IT! I can always improve, but not until I start something. It finally sank in, thank God!

Along came Reader’s Legacy / GoRead. A site that allowed me to blog and share, in a community of authors, and get paid to do it. I saw that there was no way in it’s current structure to make large sums of money, but I could take all the training possible, connect with new mentors, build relationships, and write, while covering my costs with what they paid. It seemed like a great ROI for my needs. I decided to use this site as a training site to launch my own blog, which I would monetize. Thus the birth of The New Renaissance Mind! This blog isn’t only about me, but I’m letting my voice be heard through it, and that is what my business coaches have been drilling into my head for months now. Where will it go? What doors will it open? I’m really not sure. For now it is doing more than I considered. It is giving me a new sense of gratitude, self-respect, and motivation. I discovered that I really enjoy writing and my passion for it is shining more and more.

I have faith it will drive me towards greater success, possibly to a book, or a screenplay, possibly to a business of writing services or public speaking. Wherever it leads, I’m loving the journey!

If you like my writing so far, please leave me a comment, suggestions, or even a request for collaboration. I’m having tons of fun doing this, and I am excited to share that fun!
