It’s possible I haven’t said everything I wanted about telling stories yet. Stories can be told in many ways and about so many things. Of course this realization comes to me from another Ted talk. Please take a few minutes to listen to Giles Duley’s transformation from observer to storyteller, and how he discovered he could tell stories without words to eventually realized he was part of all these stories, and finally that he became the story. From a purely narcissistic perspective I like this idea, but it does make sense. I learned inert classes and books that every portraitist includes traces of themselves in the portraits they paint. Yes, folks the rumours are true, Da Vinci had transvestite fantasies and the Mona Lisa is actually an idealized self-portrait of him in drag. Deal with it! What a story that is, don’t you think?
So, how else can we tell stories? We can create artwork, take pictures, record sounds, play music, write fiction, report what we read, see, and experience, write testimonials, marketing campaigns, design advertising, and more I haven’t thought of. I hope to tell stories in all these ways and more, here on my blog pages. A few days ago I shared that I was starting a page to tell stories about the amazing people I get to work with called The People In My Neighbourhood. I have the notes ready to expand on for three stories, and a journalist / fitness trainer friend of mine just agreed to be the fourth… as a bonus, he will do something similar for me in the form of a Podcast. I can’t wait to share that… me under someone else microscope… AWESOME! So what else?
In a page called Made With My Hands (I may change the title), I intend to share paintings, sculptures, photos, and poetry that I created. I consider myself an experimenter when it comes to art, and I absolutely adore playing with materials. I have some formal training and was mentored by a few local masters, but after learning the techniques, I returned to the fun of play. Each piece has a small story attached… sometimes it’s about what influenced it, sometimes it’s about an emotional journey yo it’s creation, and sometimes it all this and more. And I have done a 30 challenge of creating a series of abstracts… those will probably be the first to be posted and have their stories told.
I intend to tell a little of a transformation story with the books I’ve read throughout my life… this may take a while, as at last could I’m at close to 2000 books over a period of 40 years. I don’t think I’ll write reviews on all of them, but I have a bunch that I feel compelled to share and I hope to inspire others to read. These books have changed me and I’m still growing from each new book. Life is amazing and tremendous. What a blessing to not know everything… I always have curiosity & room for more learning.
I have included two segments related to my businesses… Brand Ambassador, where i intend to tell stories and testimonials about the products I represent, and TOMA Marketing… which is my company… I’ve not added much info on these yet, as I’m still formulating an entertaining story to tell about them… classic overthinking of something quite simple… With TOMA I do consulting and coaching about advertising and media, and I offer writing services. I’m still trying to console my business with this writing passion… funny how it is only in the self-description, or the elevator pitch, that I have a challenge.
Finally and ultimately, I believe the stories I tell will be a reflection of myself. Not by design, but as I learned from portraitists, we instinctively put a little of ourselves in everything we do, and since I intend to do these stories with a great deal of passion and care, I image much of myself will be revealed. Perhaps, in finding so many ways to express myself, I will help others express themselves as well. I can only strive to express my authentic and give myself honestly to my readers. I hope you like it and let me know either way. I am a work in progress and always growing.
