Lady of Fire
Musings of the Artists Mind
Let me start with the title for this one. I’m often asked where’s the fire in a blue figure? It comes from a clear image I have in my mind from some old film footage from Woodstock of girls dancing around a fire. They are dressed in many colours of blues and reds, many bare breasted, all enraptured in the music, and the ecstasy of the moment. I see this memory only through the eyes of the child I was when I first saw it. It stirs all sorts of feelings and sensations in me and I wanted to capture all the dancing women into one beautiful expression of bliss & freedom. This, or these combined thoughts are my Lady of Fire.
The form is purposefully dancing or swaying to a psychedelic beat only she can truly hear. The blue engine and red stain express the choices of freedom she wants to make, and the inclusion of the base is my crying out that we can explore bliss and not loose touch with the world we live on.

What inspires an artist?
“All they see” is the first and most literal answer.
For me, that is literally hundreds of gallery & museum exhibits, thousands of books, and tens of thousands of images online.
Books that Inspired and Influenced my Experimentation:
When asked where to start a book collections, I almost always recommend these art bibles: Janson’s “History of Art” OR Phaidon’s “The Art Book” Both give a nice overview with good pictures. Once you’ve discovered what you are attracted to there most, you can then dig deeper into that area.
These are perhaps the most accessible influences, but the truth is that my influences run deep through thousands of books and works I’ve seen & read. If you have the time, you are free to visit my GoodReads library to see a fraction of the books I’ve read. These are the ones I remember, that is. Or you can visit the ever growing collection on my Pinterest account.
