I’ve always been fascinated by Egon Schiele’s self-portraits, but not entirely certain why. There’s a vulnerability in them that I felt was recognizable in some other context and I found myself attracted to it.
I only recently figured out a possible connection for me. I’ve been loving a load of New Wave music on Spotify lately and it’s been bringing back nostalgic memories and flooding my mind with images. In the 80’s we guys had to be macho and not admit any liking to the silly makeup choices of the rock stars of that time. We couldn’t like Metal bands and New Wave bands openly. Yes, it was as ridiculous as it sounds. Well, I really don’t care now, and not sure how much I cared back then. I liked what I liked, because I liked it. Sorry, I’m rambling on a tangent.
Schiele’s self-portraits always seemed to be wearing too much blush and applying it in sharp, non-organic anglers. David Bowie & Grace Jones would surely have been fans, if Schiele was around in the 80’s. This androgynous individual connected the New Wave stylings and Schiele’s work for me. It makes me wonder if the Expressionists of the early 20th century new how much they would influence the styles of the future.
Here I’m playing with coloured charcoals from the Montmarte brand. I have to say, I think I prefer the immediacy of Grumbacher’s pencils more, but this is a comment on my impatience and occasional need to cover the surface more thoroughly.
