Get a wood one, it is easier to maintain with oils. Any local art supply store will have inexpensive ones in various sizes. If it feels comfortable to hold, get that one!

If you aren’t standing while painting, then use any clean scrap of wood. You can use a pile of newsprint as well, but remember that the oil will eventually seep through it to the table surface, so protect that.
