Mississippi Whispering- Lyrics from Outcasts, Rebels, Hobos and Bards

Inspired by The Tragically Hip’s New Orleans is Sinking. Re-imagined in what I think Tom Waits might have done, had he wrote this song.

In the Crescent City,

The Mississippi whispers incessant secrets, and 

The neon signs flicker like fireflies in a foggy bayou night, 

Trouble’s bubbling up like molasses in a slow-cooked gumbo. 

The Delta’s moaning a bluesy lament, and 

The levee’s wearing a tired smile, 

For New Orleans is sagging low, 

Sinking into the murky embrace of the Big Muddy.

Down on Bourbon Street, 

Where the ghosts of jazz legends play their trumpets in the shadows, 

Juke joints are weeping notes of sorrow. 

Rusty riverboats creak with tales of bygone voodoo rituals, and 

Whispered promises haze under sweet bourbon dreams. 

The French Quarter’s a maze of twisted tales and faded glamour, 

Where the street lamps hum a lonesome tune, and 

The air tastes like redemption and regret.

In the Corazon of the Spanish Quarter, 

where the air is thick with tales of sin and salvation, 

Strange bathroom pianos clang like rusty chains, and

Barflies trade stories like currency in a city forever running on borrowed time. 

Ol’ T.W. would feel at home here, 

Where the rains punctuate tin-can symphonies, and 

Street corners are haunted by ghosts of epic, imagined love affairs.

Underneath the red neon glow, 

The Mississippi whispers secrets to the moon, 

New Orleans is descending, and 

drenched in the delta’s melancholy. 

The street buskers dance on the edge of despair, and 

the second-line paraders march to the rhythm of a city that’s embraced its fate. 

In the Big Easy, 

where the blues are reborn daily, and 

Mardi Gras masks hide a multitude of sins, 

Her river keeps rolling, and 

The city keeps floating, 

In a sultry, boozy waltz with destiny.
