I’m really loving charcoal sticks! can you tell? They are deliciously messy and sloppy, but allow me to express so much more atmosphere. The figure comes alive on the page. He is no longer just a portrait of some creepy Victorian gent. He has become the tragic protagonist of an Edgar Allen Poe novel. Seemingly living in a constant state of terror. I can imagine the foreboding organ music playing whenever he enters a room, inviting him to make this dramatic face of fear.

I like charcoal for this reason too. If I want to Inject some colour into the picture I use pastels.

Do you gravitate more to dry or oil pastels?
The effects are so different in relation to how I work. I really enjoy the dry, because it’s messy and allows me to infuse more atmosphere. I feel dry pastel shows more of my signature process; more of my hand, if that makes sense.

I like dry pastels. I have oil pastels but I haven’t really got into them yet. I’ve tried them but that was before I got into oil paint. Lightfastness is a concept I’m coming to terms with.
