Stoneware, hand-built, folded and paddled, electric fired to Cone 6, glazed with a brushed on, brown pigment infused glossy clear glaze on the lower outside, dipped in a cobalt blue glaze on the upper part, and a blue-celadon crackle glaze on the inside. At first, I didn’t like these, but I wasn’t sure why, because my eye kept coming back to them. They’ve lived separately around my home for the last few years; each serving a different and unique function (from pencil holder, to spare change jar). During a recent redecorating I brought them all together and they spoke a different story to me as a collective piece, than they originally did separately. Now they appear as sculptural objects… languid pools of water at the bottom of each. The lowest reminds me of some ocean atoll. Looking back through my old notes and drawings, I realize that was close to my original intention. I wanted to create islands in the sea and inverted them somehow in my head.
