To be honest, I purchased this online course several years ago and just kept putting it off when more exciting (sounding) professional development opportunities arose. My initial motivation for doing it was to try a different perspective on learning and to help with my (at that time) university studies. These days, every in every course I take, I’m looking for methods and tips to make me a better teacher for my ever increasingly diverse students. So that was part of my reason too.
There are a whole lot of common sense suggestions and methods offered here in the course, but the real treasure in this course was a reminder about learning styles. Maybe I should say it was the guidance to being more self-aware of my own learning styles and how to benefit from that awareness as a strength.
There’s also a small part about setting boundaries with friends and family if you are a mature student returned to school to follow a dream or life change. Kudos to CoE for that!
In a nutshell, start with knowing why (and I mean really, really knowing all the reasons) you are embarking on your new learning journey (ie: course, degree, etc…)! This is the true goal for success.
Then great down your learning goals into smaller achievable segments and reward yourself for each.
About mid way, stop and assess if you are still on track, if your goals need modifying, or if you need to change speed.
Make sure you are can dedicate regular times for studying and build in some flexibility for life’s little surprises. This keeps you on task and builds a successful habit for learning new concepts. Exercise that. brain muscle!
Remember some of the reasons for learning new skills is to have better opportunities or a change of career focus. When you have completed your courses, brag about it: to HR, to your managers, on LinkedIn and other social media outlets. Make sure you update that old CV, of course. Anything new you’ve put energy into learning and doing well, shows determination and drive. Pretty good qualities to have, I think.
