Beauty Must Pose For Us

R - Beauty Must Pose for Us

Musings of the Artists Mind

Similar to Water Dress, this one was intended to be functional, to be used as a serving vessel. That changed as I was making it. I couldn’t find a way to continue the spout in such a way that it didn’t mare the perfect pose of the female figure I found as I was building it. So I left the arm off and kept what I felt was a pose of confidence, strength, and feminine beauty.

I had always intended it to be a dusty rose and rough finish, so I played with a red engobe I had to lighten it to this hue. I get a real kick out of this one and enjoy the fantasy that the universe was preparing me to find my wife, as this is an “Oh, no you didn’t” stance my mind’s eye sees her taking with me when she’s miffed at me for some childishness I’ve done and how it has the opposite effect of admonishing me, but instead it fills me with more love for her.

What inspires an artist?

“All they see” is the first and most literal answer.

For me, that is literally hundreds of gallery & museum exhibits, thousands of books, and tens of thousands of images online.

Books that Inspired and Influenced my Experimentation:

When asked where to start a book collections, I almost always recommend these art bibles: Janson’s “History of ArtOR Phaidon’s “The Art BookBoth give a nice overview with good pictures. Once you’ve discovered what you are attracted to there most, you can then dig deeper into that area.

These are perhaps the most accessible influences, but the truth is that my influences run deep through thousands of books and works I’ve seen & read. If you have the time, you are free to visit my GoodReads library to see a fraction of the books I’ve read. These are the ones I remember, that is. Or you can visit the ever growing collection on my Pinterest account.
