Regret is a sign of disconnect with yourself

Ok, so this quote has got me all in a bother and confusion, sort of. The bother is that when I think about the times I’ve felt bad & regretful about any point in my past, it was always about how discontent I was with my present at that time. I am absolutely dumbfounded as to why I never made the connection before. Again, I am confronted with an absolute truth about myself and feel that Abraham is taking directly to me through this post. The logic and truth seem so obvious now.

Let’s dissect my bastard inner-voice on this one, shall we. Here’s the situation, in a nutshell. At some point I’m sitting in my pity pot, not happy. I start to think about some random “should have” or “what if I had” scenario, and I feel regret. You know regret feelings, right? When your stomach feels tight, your ears hurt a little, your heart hurts a lot, and you have the world “stupid” sitting in your throat like an overly dry piece of bread. you can’t swallow it and you can’t spit it out, so it sits there causing a mild panic reaction. Well, that’s my dramatization of regret. What was my point now? Oh, right… The Ego, a.k.a. my bastard inner-voice, gets all wrapped up emotionally with the past that never occurred and writhes painful bliss that we can no longer look clearly at what is currently going on in our present. We loose the power of NOW.

There’s nothing we can do to change any of the THENs of our lives. They’ve already occurred and are now historical fact. All we can do is act on the knowledge we gained and act NOW. Acting NOW is a great thing to get aware of. When you act, you are doing something positive, so feel positive about it. It moves you along the path you are on. Remind yourself it is a positive thing to act and you will possibly start to like, and even love where you are. Where are you that love can be felt? You are in the NOW, the only place where action can be taken. I’m grateful for all the NOWs I’m getting.

How do you feel about your NOWs?

  1. Absolutely! I’m recovered from thirty years of depression and anxiety and I’m reminded that all we have is ‘now’ and that dwelling on the past is both a waste of time and energy sapping.

  2. Great post. Regrets arise when we’re looking outside ourselves to find contentment. The best kept secret, or rather most ignored truth, of all time, is that contentment comes from within and wherever we are, whenever we’re there, the time can only be now.
