Re-Imagining Tim Burton – Making Sock-Puppet Sand-Worms in Grade 1 & 2

(Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – Reboot

Well, it appears this challenge isn't quite over yet. The teacher suggested I try something with more obvious contrast. I can't remember the exact words she used, because as soon as she said it my mind went off trying to figure out how to do her suggestions... Basically, she said to make the contrasting colours … Continue reading (Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – Reboot

(Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – Time’s Up!

Well, this week got completely away from me. I barely had any time to paint, or so it felt. In reality, I still managed to do a little each day. Sorry that I didn't document the smaller steps to this point. But, it has to be submitted for the critique! This was a hard one … Continue reading (Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – Time’s Up!

(Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – First Steps

STEP 1: Ok, so I chose the composition of my items for the still-life. Then I played with placement of the lighting. Then I printed out a monochrome image, framing the composition in my minds-eye. Finally, I drew a rough and faint outline of the composition with a charcoal pencil... Step 1 Step 2: Choosing … Continue reading (Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project: A Seven-Colour Challenge – First Steps

(Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project – Possible Set-up for the next Challenge

Ok, so as I understand it, we are continuing with the colour plays... this time we are to use SEVEN (7) colours, including black and white. Also, the colours need to be complimentary (ie: opposing one another on the colour wheel). Do you think the teacher is having fun with us? She only gave us … Continue reading (Home) – Studio Painting – 4th Still-life Project – Possible Set-up for the next Challenge

Natural Dyes – The Deeper Explorations… Post-Mordants & Ph Samples

This is only half of the second level tests... the original samples, and my additional local colours choices (Sumac Flowers, & Goldenrod) have been soaked, dried, and cut into smaller strips... These are all now re-ordered and ready for their respective modifier baths: Iron water, Alkaline bath, and Acid bath. As you see them here, … Continue reading Natural Dyes – The Deeper Explorations… Post-Mordants & Ph Samples

(Home) – Studio Painting – 3rd Still-life Project – 3-Colour Palette – Ready for my Crit!

I believe I'm as done as I can be, considering I'm just under he wire to submit. I imagine I would continue to fiddle with it if I had the time, but I'm not sure it would improve the painting... I added a little more red into it to soften the shadows and found the … Continue reading (Home) – Studio Painting – 3rd Still-life Project – 3-Colour Palette – Ready for my Crit!

(Home) – Studio Painting – 3rd Still-life Project – 3-Colour Palette – A few more touches

Not quite there yet... I'm still working on the shadows and the draped cloth... well, actually, I'm still working on all sorts of parts... I just keep adding a tiny touch here and there, every time I look at it. I need to finish it soon, the time to submit is near. More to come...

Natural Dyes – The first trial baths…

From top to bottom, we have Turmeric, Madder, & Red Cabbage. Each bundle contains cotton, silks, wool and in different mordants (or none at all). All the dyeing was done in cold baths and the materials were soaked overnight. I'm not sure why I don't have similar variety with the Turmeric as we can see … Continue reading Natural Dyes – The first trial baths…

Echo Printing – Natural Dyeing Explorations – I see the possibilities here…

I'm finally finding my own way of getting through the workload of my FBRS260 class. I just have to do one thing at a time and do what I understand clearly first. The echo printing exercise seemed simple enough. Take a piece of silk habotai, scour (clean) it, lay some flowers and other organic materials … Continue reading Echo Printing – Natural Dyeing Explorations – I see the possibilities here…
