Sometimes making art is like taking a leap of faith. In this case it’s having faith in my materials: a largish canvas, a limited pallet of acrylic paints, some well loved brushes, water and varnish; throw them altogether with time and patience and voila! The technique on this and most of my newer work is a longer process of building-up very thin and often watery layers, then allowing the paint to flow as it wants and then loving the natural movements in the work. I really enjoyed making this one, because of all the different brush strokes and subtle varnishing.
Funny thing is I still feel the need to add something to this composition. Perhaps it needs a few birds in the sky and one peeking out of the tree.

What inspires an artist?
“All they see” is the first and most literal answer.
For me, that is literally hundreds of gallery & museum exhibits, thousands of books, and tens of thousands of images online.
When asked where to start a book collections, I almost always recommend these art bibles: Janson’s “History of Art” OR Phaidon’s “The Art Book” Both give a nice overview with good pictures. Once you’ve discovered what you are attracted to there most, you can then dig deeper into that area.

In a way it is beautiful, but it also has this “hard/sad” quality to it. All pictures tend to start a story in my head and this one makes me think of a family living in this place, perhaps just having gone through something difficult.

Wow! That’s amazing, and very close to the mark!
I’ve recently realized that my landscapes (& and possibly other series) are an expression of an internal battle between my joy of solitude and a fear of isolation.
I also find the balance between being alone and loneliness to be in question in these works.
Amazingly, and I am sooooo grateful to have achieved this, my works give some people expression of their internal struggles and feelings. Or so I surmise when those feelings are shared with me.
Thank you so much for sharing yours. Im so grateful for the enriching feelings I get when I see the perspectives of others.
