Those hours that cut a savage path through things,
And wreck the sweetest blooms with icy grip,
Will keep doing their whole cold-weather thing,
And shred the beauty off in every trip.
For now the leaves are flexing, green and loud,
And summer’s got the whole place in a chokehold;
But winter’s coming for that glowing crowd,
And time gets messy, ruthless, and ice-cold.
Then what was bright gets faded, ghosted, gone,
And all that fire gets drained out of the scene;
The looks, the vibe, the glow—it’s all moved on,
Like some old post that used to reign supreme.
But if that beauty gets bottled in a line,
It stays alive, way past its prime in time.
