What is Computational Creativity?

Computational Creativity describes computer systems’ capacity to produce outputs that humans regard as novel and meaningful. Rather than treating creativity as exclusively human inspiration, the term highlights a partnership: human intent and cultural knowledge guide algorithmic processes (e.g., generative models such as GANs or diffusion models, pattern-finding routines, and interactive sensor systems), and the systems return artifacts, suggestions, or behaviours that extend human creative horizons. Crucially, computational systems do not replace authorship; they reconfigure it—opening questions about provenance, responsibility, and pedagogy that schools must address.

Generative Art (example): Students use a generative model to produce iterations of portraiture or abstract forms—exploring parameters such as randomness, constraints, and training data.
