“Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.” vBy C.S. Lewis
Another amazing reminder that we must listen to our inner voices and stop worrying about the opinions of others. I’ve created artworks in various media for almost forty years now, and can easily recall the times I gave up on works, because I felt it lacked originality. My fear was that it would be judged as a poor man’s copy of some perceived to be greater work. Nowhere has this stoppage occurred more for me than in my writing. I have notebooks full of story outlines left incomplete because I feared they would seem to close to other stories. So I quit on them. I’ve done this with business articles, interviews left unpublished, and amazing people bios too. Sadly, I lost out on these, as the inspiration to do them is never stronger than when it first hits.
This quote has made me more aware of this limitation and awareness can lead to improvement and success, should I choose that path. As I was writing this another saying hoped into my head regarding originality, but I wasn’t sure of it’s origin, so I Googled it. Here are a few of the quotes I found that have me now realizing even more that I just have to go for it… not just with writing, but all my creative explorations.
“Thus I rediscovered what writers have always known (and have told us again and again): books always speak of other books, and every story tells a story that has already been told.”
By Umberto Eco
“Every story has already been told. Once you’ve read Anna Karenina, Bleak House, The Sound and the Fury, To Kill a Mockingbird and A Wrinkle In time, you understand that there is really no reason to ever write another novel. Except that each writer brings to the table, if she will let herself, something that no one else in the history of time has ever had.”
By Anna Quinden
“Everything has already been done, every story has been told, every scene has been shot, it’s our job to do it one better.”
By Stanley Kubrick
“Everybody learns differently and everybody gets to a certain point from a different direction.”
By Stan Lee
