Musings of the Artists Mind
For a while, I was playing with colour tones and how they can contrast & compliment each other. The goal was to make the subject sing through the colours and remain subtle. It’s all part of an obsession with Cubism And there was something else at work the need for the figure, who is in black & white, to shine on its own and jump of the canvas. He is a version of my signature figures and manages to captivate the viewers attention, regardless of the colours around it. This comes from strong Spanish influences, mixed with some Africanism and Egyptian stylings.
I used acrylics and different texturing substrates to play with highlights.
I’m proud to say this one has been chosen for a special fundraising auction to take place this June for the QCNA Annual Gala.

What inspires an artist?
“All they see” is the first and most literal answer.
For me, that is literally hundreds of gallery & museum exhibits, thousands of books, and tens of thousands of images online.
When asked where to start a book collections, I almost always recommend these art bibles: Janson’s “History of Art” OR Phaidon’s “The Art Book” Both give a nice overview with good pictures. Once you’ve discovered what you are attracted to there most, you can then dig deeper into that area.
If you have the time, you are free to visit my GoodReads library to see a fraction of the books I’ve read. These are the ones I remember, that is. Or you can visit the ever growing collection on my Pinterest account.
