Funny how this floppy, dusty top hat floats around my imagination. Perhaps part of me is still stuck in the 1800s. With all the anxiety revolving around Covid 19 (This image drawn on March 16th, 2020), my mind must be looking for connections to make some sense of it all. The only conclusion I can make is that I’m remembering stories I’ve read from the era of the great plagues… Maybe Edgar Allan Poe’s Mask of the Red Death. That makes sense too, as I just finished Stephen King’s “The Shinning” in which it is quoted very frequently. The yellow-green face is also a nod to disease. The close-up of the figure adds tension and anxiety to my expression. The royal blue shirt indicates that there’s something normal here, but it is out of context. The dirty colour used for the background also adds a sense that we are part of the disease we’ve created… we polluted the world and it might be fighting back.
