Shadows & Skin

Imagine wandering the Canadian tundra after a long dry season and finding the desiccated and destroyed carcass of something unrecognizable. There’s no sign of fur, only thick and deeply creviced skin. Could it be the remnants of a mammoth uncovered by the retreating glaciers? Could it be what’s left of a walrus dragged miles by a hungry polar bear? Could it be the last parts of some wandering moose, lost from the sights of wolves and vultures?

In my imagination, it could be all these things, including the remarkable skin of a long-dead tree stump. Then shadows dug deep into every wrinkle and pulled forward the myriad graystones on the surface. I envy artists who have the patience to draw and/or paint such realism. For me, I’m very happy to capture them with my camera.
