Using a handmade marking brush: The handle is made from a cedar branch, jute twine, and coloured embroidery thread. The brush is a reclaimed piece of bamboo fabrics cut from some old jockey shorts. I just knew that this material would soak up tons of ink and I could and probably should have worked on a much larger surface for this. I’m considering a new series for this brush on much larger paper. We shall see. This was one of the first mark-making drawings and I wasn’t yet sure what to draw, so I let the tool and ink decide. I guess my mind tends to go toward faces… in this case, a close-up on the eye with a look of surprise in it. Maybe it is the inner feeling I had at the amount of ink on the brush and the seriously undersized paper upon with to use the ink. Who knows? Well, I should, but I don’t this time.
