1st – This is inspired by David Park’s work. I don’t pretend to be as good as him; I am only saying some of his figurative work has me really excited and I’m loving his style and techniques… I feel my voice is coming through more in this style.

Park has a small portrait, close up on the face, with no more than the shoulders showing, and some weird wallpaper background that reminded me of waiting at to be seated at The rainforest cafe restaurants (when they still existed). I loved the play between the greens, yellows, and pinks. As with many others in my recent series, I’m overpainting an old canvas that was left unfinished, so there is already some great texture on the surface before I put on the gesso. I really feel the extra texture brings the surface to life and adds dimensionality to my compositions.

I started with painting in the figure in un bleached titanium and painting in the bold spaces of green behind it.. When that was dry, I added on the white shirt, yellow jacket, and the initial pinks for the face. My pallet was still full of paint so I mixed it together to get a brown for the hair and the branches behind the figure…

Stay tuned, there is more to come on this one…
