The words on the top of the picture: “Notre Pere” is Our father in French. I’m always grateful to my father for igniting the artistic spark in me. The elephant symbolizes grace, strength, memory and gratitude to me… When making art, one must allow themselves grace to. explore materials and make mistakes; strength to allow oneself to work with those mistakes so they might grow into something unexpected; trust your memories: muscle memory and mind-knowledge to produce the effects you desire; and gratitude for trusting in yourself. This one is done in crayon on reclaimed music sheets. The crayons allow me to slowly build up colour blends I can’t get as easily with pastels… I also don’t rub the crayon work as much to blend it. It feels more impressionistic.
More to come…
