Ok, this one may be more imitation than inspiration… well, I’m not sure. I was looking at charcoal drawings and saw someone make a portrait of some guy with messy hair. It followed closely after some stupid fashion ad on Instagram of people with “stylishly messy hair”.
Anywho… the drawing was done in a more traditional way and the figure was more traditionally chiselled. As soon as the first stroke of my charcoal stick touched paper, I started seeing other faces, from Egon Schiele to a variety of African and Japanese faces. it all coalesced into this sardonic model…
oh, that might have been a better title for it. Sardonic Model – Hellish Hair…. hmmm…. what do you think?
Of course, I used my new favourite medium, charcoal sticks to start the drawing and added some colour with compressed chalk. I’m really enjoying the extra tension if builds between the white paper and black charcoal.
