I walked around this old weathered root a few times and wasn’t sure what I was seeing. I enjoy imagining faces and eyes in all sorts of things, and I’m always fascinated by patterns, but this one just wasn’t clear. As I was editing it, I started emphasizing the contrast and definition to pull out more of the textures on the skin of the wood. The beginnings of some Haida bird spirit started to emerge for me, but that too wasn’t clear… as if the image wasn’t solid. Then I saw the other face… like a sperm whale opening its mouth. The parts I was focusing on reminded me of Cape Dorset Inuit transformation sculptures. So I cropped and oriented the image to highlight was I imagined seeing.
