I’m not comparing my skills to the artists who inspire me, but I do feel that my style has grown out of their influence and I give credit and thanks to Modigliani, Roualt, Ensor, Soutine, and Beckmann for filling my heart and soul with light. In pursuing the self-portrait, I decided to follow my process of material exploration simultaneously with style explorations.

I took a selfie and broke it down into the features I liked the most: my messy hair, the long neck, prominent nose, expressive eyebrows. As in all my selfies, I seem to be unable to open my eyes wide. To me they are open, but I am obviously squinting. The nearly closed eyes are what lead me to borrow Modigliani’s blackened eyes. The rest of the style followed that choice.
