Ok, I have to laugh at myself sometimes. I feel I’ve painted a smirk of self-admiration in this portrait. Maybe I catch a different me in my camera lens than in the mirrors I have at home. Maybe I am resisting the reality that I am starting to look my age. Maybe I just like thinking of myself this way. Yikes, this is way too much focusing on my own looks for comfort.
I decided to put down more basic colours in larger chunks of space, then blend gently with an overcoat of yellow and white. Before the wet gouache has a chance to dry, I redrew the outlines with charcoal, pressing very heavily on the willow stick (which is why there are specks of charcoal on the painting). Then I used the now-dirty varnish to coat the whole thing and show more of my brushstrokes. I believed correctly that it would achieve the movement I desired.

The New Renaissance Mindset 
This is my favorite self-portrait, so far. I like the lighter colors, the textures everywhere and the expression you managed to capture.
