Aren’t I Pretty – Music-book Doodles 2022

I’ve been wanting to revisit some old portrait drawings / paintings and just hadn’t been able to get them going… this is the first. of many to come… she is done in film pastels on salvaged music sheets. The pastels really pop on this paper. he inspiration was one of my frequent inner dialogues with a picture I’m looking at… it was some poorly-done advertisement for a forgettable perfume and the model was very clearly over-coached to look confident, presumably because of the scent she was wearing. I exaggerated the eyes because it appeared to me that the photographer was pushing the model to open her eyes more and caught her at the moment she rolled her eyes. Again, this is all the inner conversation in my head… who knows what was really going through the model’s head.
