I decided, with great excitement to start a new figure painting… I was initially uncertain about the size, or which canvas I might recycle, but one kept staring at me and I decided it needed an upgrade. I won’t tell you which it was, but the dimensions of the canvas get me really excited: 48″ (122cm) x 36″ (91.5cm) Oh, the previous painting was done in a thick impasto, so there’s tons of under-texture to play with on this new composition.

I was initially thinking of doing a massive face in Frank Auerbach style, then decided I wanted bodies in it. I wanted two tall figures. I’d been walking around all week expressing my desire for warmer weather and I was visualizing myself on a beach. That’s what got me going for this one… bathers on a beach.

I’ve only done the rough outline here and I Weill adjust the arms and legs once I’ve decided where to start adding the paint: background or figures first…

Stay tuned…
